Bay area Hospital Statistics

One of the strongest ways you can prepare to have a positive, satisfying birth experience that aligns with your preferences and intentions is to KNOW YOUR BIRTH PLACE (and also your provider).

It will be worth your while to know some info about your chosen place of birth. The statistics of all the Bay Area hospitals is public information: you can find it at calhospitalcompare.org. In this table, I have gathered some of the statistics that are usually of interest to birthing families and present it here in a concise way. My hope is that you can use this information to help you make informed decisions about your care.

As you can see, the numbers vary greatly amongst hospitals and this kind of information is important to be aware of so that you can choose a birthing location that aligns with your hoped for experience.

A little more about the “CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) Delivery” column - why is this important? Because midwife led deliveries result in better health outcomes for both birthing person and baby, in low risk pregnancies. Here’s a review, and the large study it references.

Your provider should also be able to provide you with their own personal statistics, if you would like to know.
